It symbolizes something different today than it did a millennium ago. The concept of zero, something we might say today is "no big deal" was only discovered by two other cultures: the Chinese who did everything already, and our present Aramaic numerical system. Not the Romans, not the Greeks, but the Aztecs were the ones who were able to devise the concept of zero. Yet they never invented the wheel – go figure! The calendar records a 52-year cycle and is an historical look at how they lived; a reflection of their religion and culture. If you want an education, study the Aztecs.
